Position: Outreach Specialist for Scientific Integrity Program
Organization: Union of Concerned Scientists
Washington DC
Closing Date: June 4th
Position Summary: The manipulation, suppression, and distortion of federal government science and the censorship of agency scientists have become pervasive in recent years. The Union of Concerned Scientists' SIP works to implement systemic reforms that will protect science from political interference and restore scientific integrity to federal policy making.
The SIP Outreach Specialist works with the SIP team to strengthen communication with the scientific community and raise awareness about the misuse of science with policy makers, the media, and the general public, all in support of our goals. As the person responsible for coordinating a network of thousands of scientists, duties will include a significant amount of scientist and activist cultivation.
The Outreach Specialist will develop and manage SIP outreach and education projects; write and create materials for target audiences and the website; organize special events and training sessions; manage relationships and coalitions with other public interest organizations; and develop and implement rapid response initiatives. As the program is fast-paced and dynamic, the Outreach Specialist will need the flexibility to take on multiple projects at one time.
Qualifications: A bachelor's degree is required; scientific course work is helpful. The position requires considerable self-motivation; robust oral and written communications skills; and an understanding of the scientific method. Knowledge of grassroots organizing and advocacy campaigns is essential. Applicants should have at least two to three years of progressively responsible experience in an outreach, advocacy, and/or communications position, preferably in a non-profit environment. Applicants should be able to demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with professionals who may be experts and/or prominent in their fields. Strong computer skills and event planning experience are strongly preferred. Knowledge of Spanish is a plus. Most of all, candidates should possess a working knowledge of and interest in the way in which the U.S. government functions, a clear understanding of the current threats to the integrity of science, a passion for improving the way in which science informs policy making, and a demonstrable commitment to working in the public interest/non-profit sector.
Position Details: Competitive salary and excellent benefits. The position is located in Washington, DC and will supervise interns/consultants as necessary; some travel will be required. UCS is an equal opportunity employer continually seeking to diversify its staff.
To apply: Apply ASAP; Deadline is June 4, 2008. Visit www.ucsusa.org/ucs/about/jobs-at-UCS.html for application instructions.
